Overview

Applications and admissions both fell by more than 10 per cent last year, but with around 22,500 undergraduates Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) remains one of the country's bigger institutions. It recruits strongly from the North West - and from Merseyside in particular - with students from the region making up more than 3,500 of the 6,300 UK admissions in September 2023. It is also one of the most popular English universities with students from Northern Ireland, for whom there is an extended, customised induction programme. The university took its name from one of Liverpool's leading businessmen and philanthropists, Sir John Moores, when it officially became a university in 1992, but it has a history stretching back more than 200 years. There are two campuses in the city centre: Mount Pleasant, which is home to the faculties of business and law, and arts, professional and social studies, and City where health, science, and engineering and technology students are based. There is a choice of more than 200 undergraduate degrees. Copperas Hill, home to the student life and sports building sits between the two campuses. LJMU is a big supplier of graduates to the public sector, especially teachers and nurses, and offers courses with plenty of industry-informed, hands-on learning. The university has one of the more diverse student populations, and a significant spend on bursaries and scholarships provides financial help to many.

Paying the bills

The LJMU bursary reaches the most students, offering £500 for each year of study to those from homes with an annual income of up to £25,000. Given LJMU's diverse student demographic, the number of payments is extensive. By contrast, three of its leading scholarships worth £1,000 per year are each limited to a maximum of 85 recipients, while being indicative of the broad range of students that the university seeks to attract. Academic Excellence scholarships are paid to students who achieve at least AAA at A-level (144 Ucas tariff points from three subjects). Community Excellence scholarships recognise achievement in volunteering, sport, the arts or citizenship, wbc247주소 while Opportunity scholarships are for students from black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds who have been involved in one of LJMU's sustained outreach programmes. Other scholarships include the lucrative Vice-Chancellor's scholarships worth up to £5,000 a year for five students. These are open to care leavers, mature students, carers, disabled and minority ethnic students from homes with an income below £25,000. LJMU has some of the cheapest accommodation anywhere, with rooms starting at £3,780 for a 42-week tenancy. The most expensive top out at £7,518 over 42 weeks in The Arch, one of LJMU's most modern complexes.

What's new?

The university was the first to run a single honours degree in sports science back in 1975. Almost 50 years on, the university has been ranked sixth in the world for sports and exercise science in the 2024 QS World University Rankings. The university continues to innovate with courses and will be expanding its Level 6 degree apprenticeship provision following the awarding of £1m in extra funding from the Office for Students earlier this year. It is already one of the larger providers of degree apprenticeships, with more than 1,200 learners on campus working in a range of sectors including policing, healthcare, civil engineering, chartered surveying and business management. Several significant infrastructure projects were completed in the run-up to the university's 200th anniversary last year. A new school of education for LJMU's 1,700 students and researchers in this area opened in March 2023, while the Student Life Building, which opened at Copperas Hill three years ago, brought all student services, including careers, health and wellbeing, and the students' union, together for the first time.

Admissions, teaching and student support

The university has a good record for social inclusion, with around half of those admitted in 2023 being the first in their family to go to university. More than 90% of the intake are educated in non-selective state schools, one in seven are from ethnic minorities and one in eight are mature students. Student wellbeing advisers are located in every faculty, offering a first contact point for those in need of mental health support. Centrally, the student advice and wellbeing team run a drop-in service, Monday to Friday. The university has partnered with the SilverCloud self-help cognitive behaviour therapy programme to give students online support for anxiety, depression, stress or body image problems, and it has also signed up to the Togetherall mental health service to provide 24-hour cover for students. Extensive mindfulness and meditation guidance is available on the student support pages of the university's website. EddNYJTUcAAgFHQ?format=pngu0026name=small
