How to Replace an audi key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to audi connect key the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, reprogram etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi car key case, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. If this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

It sends a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is a standard component across the Audi Q7 Key 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
