How to Replace Window Pane Window Panes

A damaged or cracked window can be a nuisance. It can also be an opportunity to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows, and reap benefits like greater comfort, a higher resale value and reduced utility costs.

It's a project you can tackle yourself at a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. You'll need only the right tools and a few hours of your time.

Glass

Replace your old single-paned windows with tempered insulate glass to improve energy efficiency, cut down on noise, and maintain the historical integrity of your older home. A majority of homeowners with hand tools can replace a window pane. You'll also require a replacement window pane, glazier's tips pliers, and latex glaze putty. If you need to you may use a heating gun to warm the old putty. Before starting, wear gloves and safety glasses as working with broken glass could cause injuries.

Remove any broken glass pieces that remain. This is best accomplished with the help of pliers but a flathead screwdriver may be effective in the pinch. Then, use a wood chisel or putty knife to remove the remaining old putty from around the frame and the sash. Be careful not to damage the window sash. Be careful and slow. This is best done on an elevated ladder, not on the ground. Also, you should have someone lower to keep it in place.

After you've removed all the old putty, you can prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. It will not make a strong seal and could leak or discolor with time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken piece of glass. However, replacing one glass pane does not require a huge amount of money when you do it yourself. Even double glazing replacement windows-paned windows can be replaced at a fraction of the cost it will cost a professional.

If you're working with a large glass window first, ensure that it is securely attached to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques you can complete this task easily and speedy.

When you're ready to start taking off the old window by prying out the metal glazing points that are attached to it.
