Top Planar Magnetic Headphones

Planar magnetic headphones offer an extensive and rich listening experience. They're popular among audiophiles looking to enhance their listening experience.

The most effective planar magnetic headphones depend on your preferences. It all comes to clarity of image and distinction, as well as clarity versus bass volume.

1. Audeze LCD-2 Classic

The LCD-2 was among the first planar earphone magnet headphones to gain popularity. It was so well-known that it is now synonymous with the technology, and is still among the top headphones available. Its sound quality is amazing particularly for a headset that is priced at more than $1,000. The bass is a long way to the point of hearing, and it offers a remarkable level of clarity. The mids and upper treble are warm, but not in an obnoxious way. Overall, planar magnetic Iem the sound is full of detail and has very little distortion.

The earpads are also very comfortable. The headband is soft and flexible, and the earpads are extremely soft. They're lightweight enough to be worn for long listening sessions without becoming tired. However, they don't offer an ear-to-ear seal like some open-back models do, and this means that you will hear the sounds around you. This isn't an issue in quiet areas but it could be a problem in noisy areas.

The LCD-2 Classics have a very sturdy construction and are built to last. The earcups are made of crystal-infused nylon which is an excellent material for a headphone. It looks tough and is much lighter than the wood rings used on other Audeze models.

However, the LCD-2 Classics don't feel quite as high-end as some high-end headphones. The LCD-2 Classics have a DIY-like feel, with visible screws and lack of a finish. These headphones are still fantastic however they may not be suitable for all.

If you're looking for a similar pair of headphones that is less expensive and less expensive, the Monoprice Monolith M1060 is an excellent option. These headphones have the same planar technology of the LCD-2 Classics but at a lower cost. The earcups are more sealed and they come with a carrying case. The LCD-2 Classics are missing the amazing bass extension and clarity that they offer. However, the sound is still incredible and should satisfy most audiophiles.

2. Meze LIRIC

Meze Audio has made a name for itself thanks to its innovative and affordable line of magnetic headphones that planar. The LIRIC 2nd Generation is the latest model of the company's headphone. It builds on the success of the first generation model, with improved performance and a new striped finish to increase the modularity.

The LIRIC has a full-frequency response that ranges from 4Hz to 92kHz, providing impressively detailed music with exceptional clarity and a large soundstage. Additionally, the headphone's QWRM (Quarter Wavelength Resonator Mask) effectively manages high-frequency peaking that can be a strain to the ears.

The headphones are designed to block out background noise and allow for high-fidelity listening in motion. The headphones feature an ovoid shape that resembles the shape of the human ear for an immediate connection to the source of sound.

The Meze LIRIC is equipped with the company's exclusive Isodynamic Hybrid array driver which has dual-shaped voice coils for improved audio quality and spatial sound. Dual voicing technology is the result of more than 30 years of research and development and makes it one of the lightest and most advanced magnetic drivers for planar magnetic iem circuits on the market.

To improve their sound quality, LIRIC headphones feature a pressure equalization mechanism which precisely regulates airflow as well as the pressure of the earcup chamber. This allows the listener to hear the same high-quality sound regardless of whether they wear the headphones in a workplace or on the plane.

In my tests in my tests, the Meze LIRIC delivered a superbly well-balanced and smooth sound that is highly enjoyable to listen to for long periods of time. The bass is punchy and deep, with a crisp treble. The soundstage is expansive and there is a good separation between vocals and instruments. I liked that no detail was too small for the headphones to miss, from the attack of PJ Harvey's 50ft Queenie to the individual guitar strings.

The Meze LIRIC is an excellent option if you're searching for the top closed-back planar magnet headphones that cost less than $2000. It's a great alternative to the Dan Clark Audio E3 but offers a slightly different timbre and is lighter overall.

3. Meze Elite

Meze Audio, a Romanian manufacturer, has been working to up their game in recent years, releasing a number flagship products. The Elite is Meze Audio's most premium headphone to date and replaces the Empyrean that was previously their flagship.

Like the Empyrean and the Empyrean, Planar magnetic iem the Elite is an open-back headphone with a unique suspension wings design that improve their wearability. The wings are like those on Dan Clark, HiFIMan or Sendy headphones in that they distribute the weight of the Elite’s larger than average driver over a larger surface area of your head, increasing the comfort of listening for long durations. They are effective and I've worn the Elite for long periods of time without any discomfort.

Sonically it is a great headphone. Elite is a reference headphone that comes with an upgraded hybrid isodynamic array driver that can deliver exceptionally low harmonic distortion, less than 0.1% across its entire frequency range. It also has an extremely high sensitivity rating of 101 dB/mW as well as an impedance of 32 ohms which means it can be controlled effortlessly by even cheap headphone amplifiers and DAPs (assuming they support the standard headphone jack).

The Elite's diaphragm has been a significant improvement over the Empyrean, moving away from the polymer that was developed by a custom-made company to a semi-crystalline low-mass film that was engineered by biaxial lengthening in a sequential manner. This process allows the Elite to be a slim yet strong diaphragm, while still ensuring an excellent resistance to stress cracking and fatigue.

This change to a lower-mass diaphragm also leads to improved speed and resolution which brings the Elite to a level of performance that puts it right up against competitors such as the Audeze LCD-2 Classic, albeit at a lower price point. The Elite is even more precise and neutral than the LCD-2 but still offers the feeling of clarity, depth, air and transients.

4. Meze HE400SE

The HE400SE planar magnetic headphones are among the most well-known on the market. It's an excellent choice for audiophiles wanting to transition to open-back models, as well as for those already familiar with planar magnet technology. It features HiFiMAN's new Stealth Magnet design that reduces distortion and wave diffraction to nearly inaudible levels.

edifier-stax-spirit-s3-wireless-planar-magnetic-headphones-bluetooth-v5-2-hi-fi-foldable-headphone-with-hi-res-snapdragon-sound-with-mic-for-audiophiles-home-studio-32.jpgThe HE400SE is a good open-back headphone, however it doesn't have the same bass extension that some other HiFiMAN headphones. The HE400SE's low end is deep and full but doesn't sound loud or bass-heavy. The overall tone is neutral but with trebles that are elevated and a forward midrange that many listeners will find pleasing.

Vocals are incredibly clear on the HE400SE. The HE400SE is a fantastic choice for listening to acoustic and classical music. This is the best budget headphone to listen to this type of music. If you're used closed-back headphones with a bass-heavy tuning, the transition may be uncomfortable. It takes several listening sessions to get used to it.

The HE400SE also has impressive imaging. The HE400SE produces a large and detailed soundstage that makes musicians feel like they are in the right place. In the song Let's Go Crazy by Prince, the vocals and drums are in front of your face. The guitar solo is also very prominent and can easily be heard over the other instruments.

The HE400SE is a great extension of the treble, with excellent clarity. The treble has a slight warmth however it isn't harsh. It doesn't sound like other open-back headphones with more pronounced treble, but it isn't as sibilant and fatigued either.

The HE400SE is an 25 O impedance device, which means it will need an amplifier that is powerful to achieve the maximum SPL. It is compatible with all smartphones and portable players but requires an amp that has at minimum 0.5 W output power to reach its maximum SPL of 102 dB.
