Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds, can completely surround the ears. They also permit larger drivers, which deliver greater bass and a wider soundstage. Many of them also feature active noise cancellation and Bluetooth technology.

1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has improved an already fantastic pair of headphones with the introduction of the WH1000XM4 wireless. They are lighter, better built and feature an audio profile that is more balanced (though they are bass heavy). They also come with an app that lets you customize the audio. Their active noise cancellation works even better than before, removing any background noise. Additionally, they have a longer continuous battery life than many competitors.

These headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0, with support for SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. This codec can transfer high-resolution audio, however, you'll need compatible devices and streaming services. In addition, the WH-1000XM4s can connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously and switch between them if needed. You can enable this feature via the Sony Headphones Connect app and it works flawlessly.

A subtle improvement over the XM3 is the sensitivity of their touch panels. They respond more quickly to the touch of the panel, which makes them easier to control during calls or listen to media. Sony has also added a feature that can make voice calls clearer and more precise during calls. This is a noticeable and pleasant addition.

The WH-1000XM4s aren't perfect, but they are among the top wireless headphones with bluetooth headphones that we have ever examined. They're comfortable, well made, and have an outstanding battery that can last longer than 30 hours continuously. They can be used in a passive manner with the TRS cable. This is ideal for travel or preserving energy.

The WH-1000XM4s make a better choice over the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfortable, and their ANC can block out more background noise. The B&Ws come with an EQ that is more flexible, as well as a companion app to tweak the audio quality. The B&Ws are more robust and can be paired with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Additionally, they support aptX HD and have an AI-driven engine that attempts to boost compressed music to high-resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme, and it enhances the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the most recent version of a headphone that became a standard for commuters as well as passengers around the world. The new model doesn't reinvent the wheel. It retains the same formula which has made its predecessor so successful but it also includes the USB-C port and improved noise cancellation.

These over-ear Bose headsets have a premium feeling and appearance, similar to the QC 35 II headphones that came before them. The headband, made of plastic, provides an incredibly solid feel due to the metal hinges at pivot points. They also have the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you extend or retract your earcups. The cups are soft cushioned pads that are securely positioned over your ears and don't put pressure to your head. They weigh 238 grams and are compact when folded. They can be paired with a sweater or coat since they can be worn even when they are not on the head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones, the QC45s do not offer the best sound at this price point. The frequencies are dull and lack the details that higher-end headphones might be able to bring out. The upper registers tend to be boosted and is suitable for most music, but could cause problems for more delicate or intricate genres of music. The bass is decent, but lacks power.

The possibility of pauseing the playback after removing the headset is a feature that's missing. This is standard in this price range and is something that Bose's competitors have been offering for years. Another oversight was the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs available in the app but it would be nice if there was a manual control.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with multipoint support as well as more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's audio and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s also include four in-built microphones to hear your voice when you make calls. The quality of calls is generally very good, but the headsets don't have the nifty capability to turn off your voice during playback which is something that other wireless headphones do. Update: A firmware upgrade for the QC45s was released in February 2022 included manual settings for EQ to the audio app. This is a very welcome change.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that produces high-performance headphones. They are renowned for their style and comfort that let listeners know that they're hearing something unique. The Bathys are their first wireless noise-cancelling headphones. They look and sound stunning. They also have a built-in high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for both wired and wireless bluethooth headphone listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for up to 30 hours. We had more than 40 hours of playback time on average on a single charge. If you have to charge your headphones then the indicator light on the right earcup will go red.

They come with a wide range of features for a pair of headphones of this price point, including support for multiple devices simultaneously and automatic pairing (though you'll have to select the source device each time you want to listen). The headphones come with a built in microphone that works with voice assistants like Siri or Alexa. The headphones come with an easy-to use interface that makes it easy to control music and make calls.

For wireless headphones that are over-ear The Bathys excel in our tests of noise cancellation. They cut down the background sound by around 9 decibels per hour on average. It's not as good as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 and Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless however it is still effective.

In our tests of headphone sound quality in our tests of bt headphone sound quality, the Bathys were a good overall performer with a frequency response that mostly corresponds to the SoundGuys preference curve, with just minor deviations in the bass and mids. The Bathys have a booming sound profile that can make vocals, instruments and cymbals look a bit obscure.

They also have excellent leakage resistance, meaning you can wear them in public without worrying about others hearing your music. Their mic is passable for recording via Bluetooth, with only slight distortion between the mid-treble and the treble.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new update of the company's flagship Bluetooth headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid but not an outstanding entry in this class. The new pair is a step up from the previous model, featuring an elegant design, enhanced gesture control and an enormous battery life.

Many of the improvements here are subtle but they create a pair of over-ears that feel like an upgrade to the previous model. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with a hardshell case that protects them when on the move. The Momentum 4s are non-device-specific, similar to other Bluetooth headphones from recent years, such as those from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. They can be used with Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but do not have the AirPods extra features, such as Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The biggest improvement is the battery that can run for up to 60 hours with noise cancellation on. This is easily twice the amount of the competition and enough to allow you to travel for a longer period of time without having to search for an outlet.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82-point score and cited their sound quality and ANC as their main strengths. He has only one complaint that they lack gravitas in mids and treble. This makes orchestral tracks sound dull instead of grand. The bass is well-rounded, Wireless Bluethooth Headphone but it's easy to over-emphasize, which can lead to fatigue in songs with strong bass lines like the drums that are pounding in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The cymbals sound a bit bubbly, but not full. There's no real depth to the lows.

The Momentum 4s are not designed to place pressure on your neck or ears. They can be a bit fidgety if you wear them around the home or for long listening sessions. They can move on your head, and make rapid head movements. This can cause them wake up in a sudden manner, which could be distracting when listening to music or making calls. Fortunately they will shut down after 15 minutes of slumber by default and can be turned off manually off using the power button.
