Quad ERA-1 Planar Headphones Review

After establishing British Hi-Fi as the leader since 1936 with their iconic ESL electrostatic panel speakers, Quad has released its first ever headphones. The ERA-1 have high efficiency and low impedance and performance that is comparable to their renowned ESL speakers.

The robust construction and the premium finish provide an exquisite feel, yet they are still comfortable and light compared to many planar designs. Two kinds of earpads are included, one made of soft leather, and the other of latex with fleece fabric. This lets you have a more customized fit and better acoustic performance.

ERA-1

The Quad ERA-1 headphones are an open, planar-magnetic earphone that has a very high degree of transparency and soundstage expansion. They are suitable to perform home audio, studio and DJ work as well as mobile use. They have a diaphragm that is very light and set between two magnets. This provides a smooth response to frequency, without any phase shifts. This is different from conventional dynamic cone speakers with a variable frequency response. I tried the track "Mining for Gold" from the Cowboy Junkies album The Trinity Session (16/44.1 FLAC, RCA), and found the string notes were well separated and remarkably well defined.

Quad ERA-1 is a better alternative to the MrSpeakers Amiron. It provides more accurate imaging and a better separation of instruments. It is a little more relaxed than the Amiron however, it still offers amazing clarity and a stunning black background. I then played the jazz quartet semi-improv piece performed by Alter Natives from their Over The Counter - Culture CD on the SST label (24/96 vinyl rip) to hear the way the ERA-1 performed with drums flute, electric guitar, and saxophone. This track requires a high speed and dynamic range to reproduce precisely. The ERA-1's impressive phase coherency, detail, and bass were evident.

ERA-4

Quad has returned to the headphone market following a long absence. The ERA-1 planar magnetic headphones builds on the company's heritage of electrostatic speakers. It is constructed with a thin, high-quality diaphragm surrounded by drivers that are matched to tight tolerances. This allows all the parts of the diaphragm to vibrate at the same time and provides better phase coherency as well as peak reconstruction.
