Model Making In Architecture

The importance of model making in architecture could be thought to have reduced in recent years. With the introduction of new and innovative architecture design technology, is there still a place for model making in architecture? Stanton Williams, director at Stirling Prize-winning practice, Gavin Henderson, believes that it’s more important than ever.

Best Robot Vacuums and Mop Combos

zcwa-robot-vacuum-cleaner-robotic-vacuum-and-mop-combo-compatible-with-alexa-wifi-app-self-charging-230ml-water-tank-for-pet-hair-hard-floors-and-low-pile-carpets-2764.jpgThe best way to keep your home clean is with a robot vacuum. It can pick up pet hair, dust, and other debris on surfaces.

Some robots are able to sync with smart assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Look for models that can recharge and resume cleaning the area they left.

1. iRobot S8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combo is a great option for a wide range of homes. It comes with a fantastic navigation system with GPS and laser sensors. It also comes with many features and control options that can be accessed through the app. It comes with a useful feature which allows you to create cleaning zones in areas that require more attention, as well as Keep Out zones in areas that you don't wish it to go. As with all Roomba devices, it is updated with new software updates that make it even better over time.

It's expensive, but it's also one of the most advanced robot vacuums that ZDNet has tested. It comes with a powerful battery that can sweep all of your home in less than two hours. It can also switch between vacuuming and mopping at the press of one button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, this one automatically empties into an even larger waste container on top of its charging dock.

It has a wide range of other features that make it a good choice for homes with a lot of space that include intelligent obstacle avoidance that utilizes the camera as well as processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It's rarely tripped up or stuck during a cleaning cycle. In my tests it was the best in avoiding objects such as power cables. However, it isn't as reliable at detecting pet waste and other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While the Anker-owned Eufy has made an impact in budget robot vacuums, it's never offered an all-in-one model which can also mop. That changes with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive array of modern features that can compete with more expensive models.

Eufy's main selling point with this machine is its laser navigation. The X8 utilizes the laser mapping system, which is more precise than the previous Eufy devices. It also takes a lot less time to create an accurate map of your space and stores multiple maps, which is great for multi-floor homes.

The X8 is a great automatic vacuum robot cleaner for floors that are clean. It is able to easily throw debris through the side brushes and into its 400ml dustbin. Its tyres are also very adept at securing edges and corners despite being circular. It's not a fantastic cat litter scooper, however, with our tests showing it only removes about 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

There's a mopping mode that utilizes the same water tank as the vacuuming. While this is good for loose spills however, you aren't able to regulate the amount of water it is using, Robot Vacuum and Mop which will limit its effectiveness when dealing with more serious stains. However, it does an excellent job of picking up pet hair, and has a higher percentage of hair removal than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is known for its quiet, effective appliances. It features a stunning design, superb navigation and a powerful cleaning power. However, it does have some operational hiccups that keep it from ranking as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

Like iRobot's latest models and models, the RX2 has a dual-sensor mapping system that uses an LIDAR sensor to map out the space and three 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real time. Once mapped the app allows you to designate virtual no-go zones and preferred areas that the robot will clean automatically. You can also start cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, view live feeds from the cameras onboard and more on the main screen.

The RX2 has superior sensors that can detect furniture and other obstructions in a flash. The suction and sweeping power are top-of-the-line and cleans up surface debris from carpets of medium pile and dust in bare floors. However, it's not exactly the most agile robot on the market. It's not the best climber and has issues with metal threshold transition strips.

Some people buy robot vacuums for the convenience of setting up a schedule using an app, only to forget about them for weeks. However, it's essential that a machine can do the job, which is the reason why our ZDNet staff examined and reviewed a few of the most popular models to help you choose the best one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac that looks like any other, but comes with several more features and is more efficient. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home, and uses them to avoid obstacles and navigate. It can even detect common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. The combination of sensors with a bump detector and an infrared sensor to keep the vacuum from stepping on steps makes it one our most flexible vacuums.

It was able to climb over thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigational skills were impressive as well and its overall score on carpet and bare floors beat out the competition. It took in 98.5 percent of surface pet hair and litter from our lab test samples.

The controls are simpler than the competitors. There is a cleaning button at the top and you can start it by using the app or by voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also create a schedule for your daily or weekly cleans, create no-go zones, and see its history of cleaning. Ion is covered in a sophisticated dark gray plastic that looks and feels appealing in your home. Its rear dust bin is easy to empty and removing the filter is the same.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is a great choice if you want a vacuum cleaner that is easy to use and simple at a low cost. It lacks some of the advanced features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, which are found in higher-end models, however, if you don't require these functions, you can save cost with this model.

The robot is simple to use and set up. It doesn't require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does come with the remote control that allows you to choose between different modes and alter the suction level. It also lets you manually take the robovac off during scheduled cleaning.

During our tests during our tests, the 11S was extremely effective in getting rid of pet hair and dirt on hard floors and in carpets with a low pile. Its slim profile made it easier to get under furniture and other items that more bulkier robots couldn't reach. It was able to pass effortlessly over door thresholds and move from one floor type to another.

Like other robots, the 11S can take in some objects such as cords, hoodie drawstrings, and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you can keep these objects off the ground and using a cord organiser when you can. It also suggests that you regularly clean the dustbin, change the filters, and clean or change the brushes when needed.

6. iRobot Roomba 980

The Roomba 980 is iRobot's most popular robot vacuum. It's pricey, but it's top-performing and is arguably the most sophisticated robot vacuum with self empty vacuum you can purchase. Its self-navigating features and environmental mapping are truly a marvel to behold. It has more advanced automation than its competitors, such as the ability to create virtual boundary markers with its mobile application. Although the application is a bit slow, and the 980 does spin a bit when rolling over cables, it's a highly efficient robot vacuum.

We love the 980 because it uses its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home. It then uses the information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path for every cycle. The result is cleaner floors, and a cleaner vacuum than most competing high-end robot vacuums.

Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate between furniture and around edges, and Cliff Detect helps to prevent the Roomba from slipping down stairs. It can also return automatically to the base station to allow for recharging in between sessions. The bin capacity and battery life of the 980 aren't as great as those of other robot vacuums. However, it is a reliable and solid machine that can keep floors clean for many hours.
