DEFRA stoves reviews Exempt Multi Fuel Stoves

There are a range of multi-fuel stoves that are exempt from defra regulations. Defra approved stoves comply with the regulations of the government, and are designed for fuel efficiency and emissions that are low.

This is especially important especially if you live in a smoke-control zone. But even if don't need to, the Defra stove is safer for your chimney and the neighbours.

Defra Approved

You may have noticed across our site that a number of our wood-burning stoves are listed as DEFRA exempt or DEFRA approved. These terms might seem like an esoteric term to the typical homeowner, but they're not.

DEFRA stands for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they manage regulations and policies in relation to the environment, DEFRA approved Eco design stoves agriculture and food. Defra approved stoves have been passed a rigorous test to ensure that they comply with the government's strict rules for the emission of smoke during their operation. They're also designed to burn approved fuels like coal and wood more efficiently, meaning that they emit less pollution.

This is good news for those living in a Smoke Control Area since the law currently prohibits the emission of smoke in these areas, unless you are using a DEFRA approved stove and a fuel that is authorised. In the past, it was possible to install a non-Defra certified stove in a Smoke Control Area as long as you only used approved fuels, such as wood. As of January 2022, the law will be altered and stoves that aren't approved aren't allowed to be used unless they are equipped with a secondary or third-party system that will reduce their productions of particulate nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and organic gaseous substances.

A Defra approved stove, also referred to as a DEFRA multi wood burning stove or fuel, has passed a rigorous test that was developed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The UK government body is responsible for protecting our natural environment, assisting the agriculture and food industries and ensuring a vibrant rural economy. The tests Defra approved stoves must pass are designed to ensure that the appliance produces minimal levels of smoke and grit when it is in operation.
