How to Replace an audi key programming G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different connector pins, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are very affordable and easily accessible, especially if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what ours are. Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi keyless go, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. This is a common feature across the new audi keys 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
