This will allow you to get the channel back into the correct position after you've finished. Remove the sash and take out all the hardware, including the beads for parting cords, chains, and cords that hold the sash in place. Sash Weights

Sash weights are able to be replaced to improve the operation of your window sash and decrease energy costs. These weights provide counterbalance which allows the window to be shut and opened without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. Over time, these chains may become damaged and render it impossible to raise windows. A new sash cord will restore the ability to move the sash up and down and will keep it in its place when opened.

To replace sash cords, the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. They are usually attached by nails or screws and need to be removed. You could use a hammer or chisel to remove them but it's best to lay down dust sheets prior to beginning any work.

After you have removed the access panel, you can begin to work on the sash. Make the small parting beads (also called "tie rails") out of their grooves using a chisel or flat bar. They are usually wedged in or nailed, but they can be snipped out and it's worth your time. If the sash is still in place, break the mortise-and-tenon joints out with a screwdriver or hammer and then take out each wood peg. The sash should move freely, however it might require some lubrication in order to feel less stiff.

With the sash open, measure enough sash cord/chain to reach from the pulley in the top of the jamb to the sash slot at the bottom. Cut the cord or chain and then fix it using Step 6 above. You can either employ a hammer, screws or nails, but nails are less likely to cause damage.
