Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

Summary: These basic and light-weight stoves burn wood as well as hexamine tablets, white fuel and gas canisters with a single nozzle. They're popular in cold weather, but they're loud and don't have a simmer control.

Some multi-fuel stoves are hybrids that can burn different types of liquid fuel. The MSR WhisperLite Universal, for example, burns white and isobutane canisters of fuel.

Optimus Nova

The Optimus Nova is a 5kw multi fuel stoves defra approved-fuel stove that can be used with various liquid fuels. It comes with a quick-priming stove and an aluminum pump that self-purges and precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and wide spreading legs make it a sturdy stove that can be used on hard ground. This makes it a great stove for backpacking groups, base camps, kayaking, and arctic camping.

The Optimus Nova is different from other liquid fuel stoves that are plagued by unburned fuel remaining in the fuel line or the nozzle. This can be fixed by flipping over the bottle. This disconnects the intake hose from the fuel, and forces it to suck air which smothers the flame and reduces the pressure in the bottle.

This seems like a fairly clever solution to a long-standing problem, and it certainly is effective. The Nova can be used with any fuel bottle with an o-ring seal. This includes MSR bottles. It comes with an oven bag that has pockets for spares, tools as well as lubricant and the fuel pump.

This is a great all-round backpacking stove that is suitable for use in the UK especially for long-distance trips in which a variety of fuels is necessary. The price is reasonable when compared to canister stoves of similar capability. Furthermore, the Optimus Nova is easy to maintain and enjoyable to use.

Kovea Hydra

Since 2010, the Kovea Multi Fuel Stove has been a cult favorite among backpackers. The Hydra isn't as well-known among UK backpackers, perhaps because they have been able to catch up with more well-known brands or the most recent lightweight options from China or Korea. However, this doesn't mean that it's less useful.

It's a small and light stove that burns all liquid fuels, including white gas and propane butane through a single nozzle. It's a pretty standard stove design with a burner bell bolted to a body that anchors three fold out support legs. A pump sits on the top of the fuel line, the generator loop goes around the inlet and the flame spreader sits above the inlet. The burner itself is a low-speed flame which allows it to be less impacted by wind.

It is a very versatile little cooker since it can be used with propane canisters or isobutane. It's easy to simmer with propane or isobutane and burns all types of fuel at a decent level but is slower than some other stoves when you use white gas.

One thing to keep in mind when using the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English which was not written by someone who speaks the language. The instructions caution against the use of certain kinds of lighter fluids that, if misinterpreted as what is actually intended can result in an accident that could result in Kovea in lots of legal hot water. Any 7/16ths UNEF-threaded gas container from a reputable brand will work perfectly.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be an excellent choice for those who are looking for a multifuel cooker that can cook with a variety fuels. It can be used with petrol/gasoline, gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves each fuel type and can also be used to adjust the flame size which is a wonderful feature. This stove comes with an fuel pipe that sits flat on the floor and can be connected to the tank quickly.

The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it requires maintenance to ensure it is operating correctly. Particularly it has a tendency to flare during priming, which could be dangerous. This issue occurs with all stoves with liquid fuel that utilize a secondary spindle on the stove end instead of a coil to vaporize the fuel.

Another issue is the fact that it requires different jets for each type of fuel. This means that if you cook on kerosene the jet hole needs to be smaller than when cooking on gas. This is a minor nuisance however it's important to mention.

MSR Whisper Light

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the smallest, lightest and most affordable best multi fuel stoves-fuel stoves. It is also simple to repair in the field. It is able to run on canister fuel or liquid gas and comes with attachments for both. The new model is lighter by 10% than its predecessor, and the burner system was redesigned to improve heat distribution. It's perfect for beginners or backpackers who are budget-conscious.

It takes some time to install, prime, and boil water but the whistler Lite is a reliable camp stove that will not let you down. The flame is extremely strong when turned to the max and can easily boil the water to a liter in two minutes or less. The only drawback is that it's not as effective for simmering as other stoves.

MSR developed the Dragonfly to be a more capable burner. It's designed in the same way as the whistler, but it is smaller and has better performance. It's not as inexpensive as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is an excellent alternative that offers the same setup at less than half the price. You can also purchase a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane containers as well. The same fundamental design is used in both but the Universal version can also be run with canister fuel in addition.

Coleman Sportster II

This is a simple low-cost, no-frills Coleman stove that can do the job. It's compact, self-contained and solid, with the tank on the bottom and the burner on the top. This makes it simple to use and a great option for those who are new to backpacking, who want to save on weight and for those of us who like to keep an extra or two in the van.

The stove is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha gas, also referred to as white gas) This stove can be used with non-leaded gasoline, as well. This will save you money since gasoline tanks can last as long as the conventional Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.

Liquid fuel stoves come with a learning curve as you'll need to pressurize and prepare them to get a nice blue flame going. If you're not careful, fuel can be sprayed onto the burner, or sputter. Do some practice outside before going on your next trip to learn how to do it.

The stove will lose some of its performance and effectiveness if you use non-Coleman gasoline, but this is a tradeoff in its versatility. Make sure you purchase gas that is not leaded and not that's enriched with alcohol or Methanol. That's because these types of fuels can cause the unit to disintegrate, leak, sputter and possibly even explode!

ATG Jiko

The ATG Jiko multi-fuel stove from South Africa (formerly known as the Jiko) is an ultralight multifuel stove made for harsh environments such as Africa. It's a compact and reliable system that can burn solid fuel tabs, gels and alcohol with only one nozzle. It is a minimalist, ultralight design that is priced lower than other multifuel stoves. Fuel is also cheaper per liter than gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves use a separate nozzle for each kind of fuel. It can be difficult to switch between fuels in cold weather, or when wearing gloves. This can also increase the overall weight. The newer types of multifuel stoves have come up with ways to use the same nozzle to ignite various fuels, which makes it easier. They can be referred to as hybrids or compressed fuel multifuel stoves. They can also be referred to by other names such as white gas, isobutane kerosene and unleaded gasoline/car fuel.
