A Texas woman has been banned from Carnival Cruises for life after she tried to board a ship with CBD gummies to help her sleep.

Melinda Van Veldhuizen, Bioxtrim power spin scrubber 42, from Texas was planning to go on a Carnival Cruise with her family in August to celebrate her 21st wedding anniversary and her son's senior year.

The Dallas-based nurse was a cruise ship regular - she even had priority boarding for her ocean-travels departing from PortMiami.

But the Carnival Cruise line has now banned her from ever stepping foot on one of their ships again after a steward discovered her CBD sleep gummies - which are banned by the company - during a routine baggage search.

'I have trouble sleeping, so it was just to make sure I could sleep on the trip - so if there were any issues, I could sleep. I've always traveled with them, no problem,' Van Veldhuizen said.

When an employee located the gummies in her luggage, she prevented her from boarding the ship.

Her family decided they couldn't board without her and didn't end up leaving with the rest of the passengers for the vacation.

Van Veldhuizen said: 'To me, it seems like an extreme measure. The Captain finally came down and the man said based on the weight of your gummies you won't be able to board.'

Not only did they prevent her from boarding the Carnival ship for her cruise - they also banned her from ever take a trip with the cruise line ever again.

A letter was sent to 'confirm' Van Veldhuizen's discussion with Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Horizon personnel where she was informed that she would be disembarked from the vessel and 'not be permitted to sail onboard any Carnival Cruise Lines vessel' in the future.

The paperwork said that the decision was based on her 'actions' on the cruise - when she attempted to bring the non-THC CBD gummies on board in her luggage.

Rocco Lubrano, the vessel's Captain, justified the decision because the weed gummies apparently 'interfered with the safety and/or enjoyment of other guests on the ship'.

A carnival spokesperson told Local 10 News there are messages about marijuana and related prohibited items pre-cruise and on the cruise line's website

Van Veldhuizen was told that she would be held responsible for her travel expenses and that any future booking would result in cancellation.

The Texas woman is now $10,000 out of pocket.

Marijuana and marijuana derivatives are against the rules of the ship - but CBD gummies aren't any of those things, says Van Veldhuizen's lawyer - Daren Stabinski.

According to a cruise expert, Stewart Chiron, just because a substance is legal at point A doesn't mean you can take it to point B.

'They do have certain items that are not allowed on board the ships,' he told Fox35.

'People need to adhere to those rules in order to keep themselves and everybody else safe.'

CBD is an extract of the hemp plant - which is a non-intoxicating breed of cannabis.

Manufacturers of CBD gummies claim that the candies are effective at relieving anxiety, depression, pain, inflammation and can help improve sleep.

Although states across the U.S. continue to ease penalties for the use of marijuana, cruise lines have reaffirmed their stance on the drug as the number of guests rises to pre-pandemic levels.

In August, the Cruise Lines International Association predicted that passenger volume would surpass pre-pandemic levels, with 31.5 million passengers this year.

But with more guests comes a higher likelihood that at least a few will break the rules.

Travelers may want to think twice about bringing marijuana onboard, as discovery of the drug may lead to fines, arrest and a ban on future trips.

At Royal Caribbean International - home to the world's largest cruise ship, Wonder of the Seas - marijuana use is strictly prohibited.
