Pete Doherty claims rural Normandy 'saved' his life as he discussed his battle with drug addiction in a candid new interview.

The Libertines musician, 45, has been off hard drugs for three years and has now settled down in Northern France with his wife Katia and their one-year-old daughter Billie-Mae.

Speaking to Sunday Times Home, Pete discussed not making the 'smartest financial choices' during the depth of his addiction, and now he is 'paying the price'.

He said: 'Moving to rural Normandy probably saved my life.

'When I first moved to France I stayed in cities like Marseilles, Paris, Lille and Perpignan, but it was too easy for the dealers to find me.'

The Libertines musician, 45, has been off hard drugs - including crack and heroin - for three years, but still drinks alcohol

Pete later said: 'Even when we were having No 1 albums and I was making good money, I never saved or invested.

'The more money I made, the more I spent. Unfortunately I am now paying the price for that — still trying to sort out tax bills from ten years ago. You've got to remember that when you're in the depths of an addiction you don't make the smartest choices.'

Despite this, Pete has made one of the most unlikely comebacks, and last year revealed he is once again a millionaire.

The former crack and heroin addict, who has returned to headlines after starring in a new Louix Theroux special, has seen the value of companies that channel his cash hit £1.05million after finally getting his life back on track.

His Arcadian Endeavours business is now worth £853,000 and the aptly named Doughhurty Limited is up to almost £200,000.

Accounts for the companies have been released after Doherty, 44, won praise for his frank interview with Louis, which was aired this week.

They reveal that Doherty has been able to borrow almost £600,000 from the companies which manage sales of music and business interests.

In the documentary, largely filmed in Etretat, Northern France where the former hellraiser now lives with his wife and baby, he admitted he was a 'very sick man' and that 'death was lurking'.

He has been off hard drugs for three years, but said he still drinks and was seen swigging rum and chain smoking in the Theroux interview.

As well as hitting screens with the legendary documentarian, he is also the subject of a new film focused around his demons, which hit cinemas last week.

Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin shows the extent of his horrific drug addiction, his pained performances at the height of his illness and also contains film of him with his friend and lover Amy Winehouse.

The documentary was shot by his wife Katia de Vidas over a decade, and in upsetting scenes he is seen smoking drugs and writhing in the aftermath.

He is also shown tying a tourniquet around his arm just before injecting heroin, before scenes shoot to him shouting at a crowd of adoring fans: 'On the one hand, thank you, on the other hand... f**k you'.

In other chaotic moments he is also shown setting various things on fire.

A glimpse of Amy saw the troubled star looking upon one of his gigs, in an insight into their relationship - which Pete previously alleged evolved into a romantic relationship prior to her 2011 death aged 27.

Pete is seen in the depth of his addiction - which led to a string of rehab stints and brushes with the law - with his wife, with whom he shares five-month-old daughter Billie-May, behind the lens capturing his darkest moments.

Pete was known for his well-documented drug use and disruptive antics during the height of his career. And the singer has now revealed the brutal extent of his addiction in a new shocking documentary, filmed by his partner Katia.

Filmed over 10 years, Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin delves into the moment Pete realised he had a buy Heroin online addiction as he confesses he smuggled heroin into Japan in his guitar case.

Speaking in the film, he says: 'Hard drugs entered my life and slowly, slowly, and then very quickly, took control.'

He took heroin for the first time in 2002 when he was just 23, yet the addiction didn't fully take hold until he found himself sweating and sick after a journey to Japan.
