The brain injury from a TBI can be caused through a hit, bump or jolt on the head, whether it's from a force that is blunt or penetrating wound (such as a bullet). The injury could affect the entire brain or a particular lobe of the brain.

Some TBIs can be classified as closed while others as open. The classification is determined by the extent to which the skull has been fractured and whether the skull was shattered or opened by the impact. TBIs range in severity, ranging from concussions all the way to death. Patients with TBIs are at a higher likelihood of developing depression and PTSD and other mental health problems.
