Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot

The slot is the best option for wide receivers who are quick, since they can get open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a speedy wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a good player for intermediate and short routes.

The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers that are more effective on short and intermediate routes than deep ones like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy, who will be the Rams principal slot receiver this year is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are likely to play a bigger role in downfield targets. Moreover, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines inside on the majority of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they are lined up inside. They can be targeted further down the field and are often faced with one-on-1 coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. McDuffie is the leader in the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, while Moore has the highest tackle-stopping efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by putting his slot for nickel and dime packs and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been a huge benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are equally good. As a whole, wide receivers with a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns around the same amount as those who are on the edge. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers rather than other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.

It's therefore fascinating to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. In fact, he's running a higher number of routes in the slot than most players listed on this list. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes huge plays on the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this ranking however, he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is a great player for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who can put up big numbers with targets of both kinds is a further example. He has a high slot receiving grade and is among the league's top winning slots players at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable opponent for contested catch.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, making him a crucial part of his team's defense. He's struggled to stop passes from the outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside poor linebackers and safeties who aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed. He also has a great ability to run routes.
