How to Replace Window Panes

A cracked window double glazing replacement pane is an issue. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows, and reap benefits like improved comfort, increased potential for resales, and less costs.

Glass

Replace your single-paned windows with tempered insulate glass to improve energy efficiency, reduce noise, and maintain the original character of your old home. The majority of homeowners with basic hand tools can repair a window pane. In addition to a new pane, the following items are required: latex glazing putty; pliers, glazier's points and a heat gun for warming the old putty, if needed. Wear safety goggles and gloves before you begin. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. This is best done using pliers, however, a flathead screwdriver can also be effective in the pinch. Use a wood chisel, or putty knives, to take away any old putty remaining around the frame and window sash. Work slowly and carefully and be careful not to break the current window sash. It is recommended to do this on a stable ladder rather than the ground and to have someone stand below the sash to help hold it in place.

Make sure the window frame is ready to accommodate the new pane after you have removed the old glue. Measure the width and height of the opening for the sash by subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). These measurements can be sent to an hardware or home centers store to have a piece cut of glass stock to the proper size. You can also cut the glass by yourself if you have the appropriate tools.

After putting in the new glass, apply some caulking around the edge. This will make the glass weatherproof. Then install a glazier's point on each side of the frame to secure the pane into the right place. The points should not be tight enough to cause friction between the frame and the sash however they should not be loose.

Before putting the putty on, knead it thoroughly until it is smooth and free of lumps. Roll it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip in the corner of the frame, working from one corner to another to ensure it is smooth and even.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are small triangular pieces of steel that help secure the glass into the window frame without causing any damage to the fragile surface. It's easy to learn how to use this secret tool and you can save money on the cost of an expert installation.

After the old putty as well as the glazier's point are gone Clean the frame thoroughly using a utility knife to eliminate any remaining residue. If necessary it is necessary to lightly sand the wood in the grooves of the rabbets to smooth out rough spots. If you sand wood protect it with painter’s tape to prevent accidental damage.

Note down the dimensions of the frame. These measurements can be taken to a home center or hardware store and the new pane will be cut slightly smaller. This will ensure that the pane fits perfectly and allows for expansion and contraction.

Place the new pane in the frame and push it in place by using your hands. Use the point of the chisel or the back of the putty blade to tap in the glazier's points, as shown in Figure 11. After you're done, the points should be in line with the top edge of the pane and the shoulders of the points should be just below the rabbet's rim groove.

Apply a thin layer glazing compound on the rabbet grooves and edges of the glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Allow it to dry and cure completely.

Once the glazing compound has dried it's time to put in the new window sash. First, saturate the wood with a heavy coat of Linseed oil. This will prevent the new putty from taking up the moisture and drying out and cracking over time. Apply the coat using a brush or the edge of your putty knife, and then use the chisel, or the back end from the putty knife to gently hammer in the new sash and glazier's points into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches around the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown at you or an unintentional rock, or a fallen branch can cause a window pane to break or crack. Most windows can be replaced easily by putting in a new piece. The glass is held in place with a small metal clip called a glazier's point, and putty, often called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area using an abrasive, pull-type scraper, or a wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while working. If the window is glued to the frame, you'll have to employ a heat gun in order to soften the adhesive prior to cutting it loose.

If you're planning to install the original sash, remove any pieces of molding that secure the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready for new caulk. Once the sash is put back in place then, you can apply a silicone caulk over the glass. This will ensure that it doesn't be leaking or fade over time.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash where the glass is located. If they're hard to chisel out, try placing an instrument like a heat gun to soften them first. When using a heat tool, be careful to not scratch the sash and its railings.

Make the bed for your new pane after you have removed the old putty and glazing points. Roll a rope of glazing compound between your hands, and form it to be about 1/2-inch thick. Place it into the rabbets where the glass will be put. The glass must rest against the putty on both sides. If needed you want to tap your glass lightly into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has cracked, you can use a silicone caulk or glass glue that is based on solvents to cover the crack before pressing it in the sash. In other cases, you'll need to apply putty over the crack to form an airtight seal and keep water out. Once the putty is dry remove the oily film off of the glass and allow it to dry completely before you paint. Paint before the putty has dried completely. It will not make a strong seal and may discolor or leak over time.

Paint

If you've experienced a broken window pane, you might be worried about the cost of a new one. However, replacing a single glass pane doesn't need to cost a fortune if you do it yourself. In fact, even a replacement double glazing windows-pane window can be replaced for a fraction of the cost of an expert.

If you are working on a large-sized upvc window Lock replacement, make sure that it is securely attached to the frame. With the right tools and techniques to accomplish this task fairly easily and speedy.

When you are ready to start with the removal of the window pane. Pry out the metal glazing points that are attached to it. These are tiny metal triangles that function as "nails" to hold the window in place. They are buried beneath a bead or glazing putty which hardens into solid wedge that holds the wood frame securely in place and hides the points.

Once you have the old pane taken away Clean up the frame and wood. Scrape off any old paint and sand the rabbet grooves in which the glazing points were. Sand them down to clean wood surfaces, so that you can paint the frames the same color. After sanding the wood you can apply a layer flax oil. This will help to prolong the life of the frame.

Then, you need to measure the size of the window opening. It is necessary to take vertical and horizontal measurements of the entire opening, and also the thickness of the old pane. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to ensure that you have the exact size for the new pane. This will also allow for expansion and contraction of the glass in times of seasonal change. You can take these measurements to a hardware or home improvement store and have the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
