How to Replace Window Panes

A damaged window pane can be a nuisance. This can be an opportunity to upgrade to energy-efficient windows or insulated ones and enjoy advantages like improved comfort, higher resale value and lower utility costs.

It's a project you can do yourself for a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. You'll only require the appropriate tools and a few minutes of your time.

If your single-pane windows are old damaged, cracked or deteriorating, replacing them with newer glass that is tempered or insulated can increase energy efficiency and reduce noise while preserving the original character of older homes. Most homeowners with basic hand tools can repair the window pane. You will also need an extra window pane, glazier's suggestions, pliers, and latex glaze putty. If you need to you can use a heating gun to warm the old putty. Before starting, wear gloves and safety goggles as working with broken glass can cause injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. It is best to use pliers for this however, a flathead may be used equally. Then, use a wooden chisel or putty knife to take the remainder of the old putty from the frame and the sash. Be careful and slow and be careful not to break the current window sash. It is best to do this on a stable ladder rather than the ground, and to have someone stand below the sash in order to help hold it in place.

Make sure that the window frame is ready to accept the new pane after you have removed the old putty. Measure the empty frame's dimensions and write down accurate measurements. Take these measurements to a hardware store or a home center and request that the new pane cut smaller than the frame's opening. This will ensure a snug fit and will allow room for expansion and contraction.

Insert the new pane into the frame and push it in using your hands. Then, you can use the point of your chisel or the back end of the putty knife to tap in the glazier's points, as shown in Figure 11. When you're done, they should be level with the top edge of the pane, and the raised shoulders of the points should be just below the rabbet's rim groove.

Apply a thin bead of glazing compound over the edges of the glass that has been made and into the rabbet grooves, to seal and protect them. Allow it to dry and cure fully.

After the glazing compound dries, you're ready to install the new window sash. First, you need to coat the wood with a thick layer of linseed. This will prevent the newly-created putty drying out or cracking due to the moisture it absorbs. Use a brush to apply this coat, or the point of the blade. Then, use the chisel on the back of the tool or the back of the putty handle to gently hammer the new sash or glazier's point into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this procedure every 10 inches around the perimeter of the frame.

Putty

A baseball that is thrown, an errant rock or falling branch could cause a window pane to crack or break. Luckily, most windows can be easily replaced by simply placing a new piece in the proper place. Before installing a replacement pane, first take out the old one and clean the area with a rag and an abrasive scraper that is a pull type or the wood chisel. Paint after the putty has completely dried. It will not form a good seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

You might be worried about replacing a broken pane of glass. But the truth is that replacing a single glass pane doesn't have to break the bank when you do it yourself. Even a double-paned window could be replaced for a fraction of what it will cost an expert.

If you are working on a large-sized window, make sure it is securely fastened to the frame. This can be done relatively easy and quick with the right tools and techniques.

When you are ready to begin, remove the old window pane. Pry out the metal glazing points that are attached to it. These are basically small metal triangles which function as "nails" that keep the window in place in the wood frame. They are placed under a bead or glazing putty which hardens into a solid wedge that holds the frame in place and hides the points.

Once you have the old pane removed clean the surrounding frame and wood. Scrape off any paint that has been used, and sand the rabbet grooves in which the glazing points were placed. Sand them down to clean wood surfaces, so that you can paint the frames with the same color. After sanding, apply a layer of flax oil on the wood's surface to help extend its lifespan.

The next step is to determine the size of the window's opening. You'll need to take horizontal and vertical measurements of the entire opening as well as the thickness of the old pane. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to ensure you get the exact measurement for the new pane. This will also allow for expansion and contraction of the glass during seasonal changes. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides.
