A dad says he ended up 'cooked' like the chicken strips he was frying after his clothing suddenly caught fire in a freak accident while he was making dinner, resulting in third degree burns. Mike Manning, from Menifee in California had been cooking leftover chicken breasts for his family's dinner on Thursday, May 2nd when his shirt went up in flames. The 53-year-old said at the time he didn't realize the severity of the burns as his body went into shock. But when his wife Tiffany Manning, 43, found him lying on the floor next to the stove, she dialed 911 and he was rushed to the hospital.

And after undergoing surgery to dress the burns, the former casino worker underwent a skin graft where skin was removed from his right thigh to help heal his injuries. Mike said: 'I took one of the strips out [of the pan] to cut it in half to see if it was cooked and then somehow it seems like I slipped forward [towards the counter]. 'I couldn't figure out what had happened at first as I had only used a couple of teaspoons of oil and the pan was still on the stove.

'My wife came in and told me not to touch my arm. I didn't know what she meant as at this point I didn't know I had burned myself. 'My shirt went into the flames. I fell to the floor when this happened. It [the fire] started at the bottom of my shirt and came up to below my armpit. 'The doctor said my shirt was like a bamboo material and said this was pretty flammable. 'He said either there was a little string from my shirt that acted like a fuse and caught fire or when I put the second chicken strip in a bit of grease may have hit my shirt and caught light.'
