They decide to record a brand new album and change their name an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a huge tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

It was the first time in over 31 years that all of Toto's original members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

The group returned to performing in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album marked a return to the band's best form and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
